Various Gunpla Types Released
Part I: Regular Released Gunpla
High Grade (HG):
The most well known Gunpla plastic model scale in the market. Began in the 90’s, these kits have an estimate size of 14 cm to 18 cm in height. They provide better range of motion and greater poseability. With the advancement of technology and the introduction of “All Gundam Project”, High Grade kits have better articulation, detail, mechanical improvements, and hassle-free building.
The most common is the HG 1/144 Gunpla kits, starting from HGUC 1/144 Guntank (#001) to HGCE 1/144 Freedom Gundam (#192). There’s also HG 1/144 kits made from various Gunpla series, from Gundam Seed to Gundam Build Fighters Try.
There’s also the HG 1/100 and HG-Ex 1/60, but they’ve already been discontinued.
Super Deformed (SD):
One of the longest running Gunpla made, starting from Captain Gundam (#001) to Lightning Gundam (#398) and others, these non-scale Gunpla features a disproportionately large head, a small body, and a limited articulation feature. They are assembled very easily without the use of hobby tools, but requires lots of detail or paint to get the best out of the kit.
Real Grade (RG):
Introduced in July 2010 during Gunpla’s 30th anniversary, Real Grade 1/144 kits integrate design and detail from Master Grade and Perfect Grade kits. With an inner frame, Real Grade kits boast a challenge to Gunpla modelers due to its intricate details and complexity. The latest kit to be released on this line is the popular MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame.
Master Grade (MG):
Introduced in 1995, Master Grade kits come only in 1/100 scale. These kits boasts an inner frame which adds a superior range of motion compared to lower level kits. With a price more expensive on some HG 1/144 kits, Master Grade kits provides a higher challenge with a complex build, longer time frame to build, and more details. The latest kit to be released from this line is the PF-78-3A Gundam Amazing Red Warrior from Gundam Build Fighters Try.
Reborn-One Hundred (RE/100):
Introduced last September 2014, this next generation Gunpla reintroduces the 1/100 Gunpla series. This line focuses on the obscure, and large units that would have costly production if made into an MG kit. Though it does not have an inner frame like MG, it has better articulation and detail equal or better than HG 1/144 kits. The recent one to join this line is the MSK-008 Dijeh from the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series.
Perfect Grade (PG):
The highest quality Gunpla grade introduced in 1998. Scaling at 1/60 (approx. 30cm tall), these kits costs between USD$ 100 to USD$300. Besides an inner frame, some kits include LED fixtures and wirings, screws, nuts and bolts, and metal parts. There are only 16 kits produced on the PG 1/60 lineup as of September 2015, where the RX-0[N] Unicorn Banshee Norn is the latest to join the Perfect Grade line.
